Salut fellow Rooted Nutritioners!

It took me a few days to get organized. Nuts and seeds haven’t been part of my shopping items for as long as I can remember! I galloped around grocery stores and now I have a full complement of delicious spices, seeds and nuts – Hazelnut and Walnuts are my favourites, though I am partial to Brazil nuts but I can’t seem to find them in the bulk aisles. Are they too delicate and expensive, maybe? All said and done, everything’s mis en place, so to speak, for a culinary makeover and I am raring to go.

D Day has commenced and the target is to lose 20lbs in two months – a target I will carefully track (remember my starting weight is 295 lbs). I talked with Andrea about this and it’s not an impossible task but it does require discipline. Those first few days when you are making a major dietary alteration can be a big adjustment for the system and my experience has been no different.

In fact, I felt a little lethargic and had some mild headaches. I guess my body was missing the coffee and coke. Moreover, it was a shock to my system as well as my body was cleaning out the gunk. It took a few days for things to settle down and I can say that definitely I felt a difference – a little brighter and bouncier.

It helps that I love to cook. So, getting the program rolling from that perspective was easy. Take, for example, my breakfast – I just love my first meal of the day now. It’s oats soaked overnight with a dash of apple cider vinegar. Come breakfast time, I add a teaspoon of nut butter, flax seeds, raisins, fresh berries and walnuts washed down with a cup of green tea. I think it’s a smashing start to the day. It fills me up and I think sets a great benchmark for what I need to eat for the rest of the day. And on Sundays, I get to eat oven baked yam fries with two poached eggs – what a surprise! Wow, simple but satisfying – those two ingredients really compliment each other.

The first week has had some challenges. Foremost, I’ve been having cravings for coffee. If I’m in a store and I walk past the coffee section it’s like I’m a pregnant. ‘Huh, what the hell is he saying’ you may ponder. Well, the aroma really hits me in a way that it never has before. My sense buds are all a tingling and dancing with the smell of great Joe! Do I give in? Do I hell. I just walk on by. My will is strong and though the flesh is flabby it’s not weak…well, this week anyway. Conversely, discipline at the beginning is easier; ask me in two months, I may have a tale of woe to tell.

I also wonder about my portion control. I’ve bought some smaller bowls to cut out the guesswork. More importantly, my body needs to get attuned to smaller and more regular quantities of food.

Overall, I’m pleased. This train has glided smoothly out of the station. I’m off to a good start. Let’s hope there’s no leaves on the line or the wrong kind of snow to derail me. My question is how fast will the train go? Am I a sleek TGV destined for a high-speed journey or a clapped out local train headed for the buffers? Given this week’s performance I’d like to say I’m that Train Grande Vitesse but you never know I could turn out to Thomas the Tank Engine or worse still the fat controller!

All onboard for next week’s installment! Get your tickets now to find out if I go off the rails.
